West Nile Rural Development Agency (WENIRUDA) is a nonprofit agency and company that connects the West Nile region of Uganda to best practices and resources around the world. This year WENIRUDA brought prestigious GreenMango scholarships to West Nile's brightest and well-rounded students. These scholarships are funded by donors from across the globe. In this inaugural year, five students won the award: three from senior four and two from senior six. The first GreenMango Scholarship award ceremony took place on May 30, 2008, in the Catholic Centre Cafeteria building.
The key objectives of the award ceremony were to:
1. Congratulate the scholars and to recognize their families and friends.
2. Advertise the GreenMango scholarship and WENIRUDA to local people and leaders.
The 100 guests invited to the GreenMango scholarship award ceremony were selected to represent a cross section of the local community, which included district leaders, parents or guardians of the scholars, NGOs, donors, school administrators, teachers, students, members of WENIRUDA as well as members or the Arua community. The event drew media attention and was the headline news on the radio that weekend.
The following comments represent the balance of sentiments expressed by the event's speakers.
Lillian P. Obiale, Executive Director of WENIRUDA
Lillian thanked the staff of WENIRUDA for their competence, commitment, and hard work and above all volunteering with the organization…"WENIRUDA will always stand for and be guided by these salient but often violated principles: integrity, honesty, transparency, accountability, and equity," she added.
