In rural Uganda, children are generally unexposed to reading and writing until the age of six, which may delay their learning and contribute to their high primary school dropout rates. To begin tackling this serious problem, WENIRUDA has begun building rural kindergartens in villages surrounding Arua town. Our Rural Kindergarten project is funded by a grant from the Erik Thune's Foundation, a Danish charity that supports children and youth in need.

WENIRUDA has established four schools, one in each rural county in Arua district for children between the ages of three to six years. There will be 30-40 children and two teachers in each school. WENIRUDA recruits and trains the teachers, and provides them with a small salary. On Sunday 21st March 2010, WENIRUDA signed employment contracts with the eight teachers and four cooks. The contracts stipulate that staff members adhere to the core values of WENIRUDA: Respect for Human Rights, Integrity and Transparency.
All four schools are now in full operation. Even though the project is funded primarily by the Erik Thune Foundation, parents of the children will contribute towards establishment or operation of the schools. Our goal is to eventually transfer ownership and responsibility for the Kindergartens to the local communities. This project could not have been possible without the support of our global network. We thank all the people who have continued to work with WENIRUDA.
